Today's digital world is evolving at pace - especially in this new age of AI. As AI and other emerging technology continues to evolve, it's important we don't leave people behind. In our second blog in the series, we spoke to X - a community partner in our National Digital Inclusion Network - to find out what they're doing around AI, the challenges they're facing and what their communities are saying about this new era of technology.

What is your hub doing to support people with AI?

X are passionate about supporting their community in X with the tools and confidence to take part in today's digital world. Recently, they've been running sessions to help people understand how Artificial Intelligence works and how it can support their everyday lives.

The hub delivered a series of interactive workshops and drop-in sessions for their community - many of whom are older adults or people with English language and digital support needs.

The sessions were designed to be friendly and practical, showing "AI is for everyone, not just for experts."

The people attending the sessions learnt about tools like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and ChatGPT and also how to use voice commands, ask questions, set reminders and more.

X alos provided laptops to people who needed access to devices at home, making sure no-one was left out due to lack of technology.

Are there any challenges your hub is facing with AI?

The hub did face some challenges, but have overcome these.

Some people were nervous or unsure about using the technology.

Language barriers also made it harder for some to understand how AI worked.

Additionally, not everyone had access to a device at home.

The hub overcame these barriers by:

  • Offering regular, supportive sessions
  • Using translators to explain AI concepts
  • Distributing laptops and tablets to those in need
  • Providing one-to-one help when needed

This patient and inclusive approach helped learners build confidence over time.

Has there been any interest from your community in learning about AI?

Several of the hub's learners have purchased their own Amazon Alexa devices after
attending the sessions. Using the devices to play their favourite music, set daily reminders, check the weather, get cooking instructions and practice English.

X said:

"The response from our community has been very positive. Many participants joined with limited digital knowledge but left feeling excited and more confident. People
who were once unsure about AI are now using it in practical ways at home."

X added:

"This shows that age and background are not barriers, with the right support, anyone
can learn and enjoy the benefits of AI."

The hub will be continuing their AI sessions - exploring more AI tools and helping people to apply them to their daily routines - whether that's managing health, staying informed or making life a little easier.

X summarised:

"At X, we believe that digital inclusion means everyone should have
the chance to take part, and AI is another step forward in that journey."
